Southern Forest Health Atlas of Insects and Diseases
ABSTRACT
The Southern Forest Health Atlas of Insects and Diseases is an electronic collection of data about forest insects and diseases along with related data for the Southern United States. Data are specific to an insect or disease, or are related general information such as soil characteristics or forest conditions. Data are stored and manipulated in a Geographic Information System (GIS). The GIS is used to analyze the data and provide information that answers questions about interactions of pests with each other and different elements. Information products such as maps can be produced from the data for various geographic extents ranging from a small group of counties to the thirteen states in the southeast. In addition to geographic extent, several layers of the atlas have attributes that can be portrayed over time.
