GIS Resources on the Internet
8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (lunch, materials, and refreshment breaks are included in registration fee)

The Internet is the hottest information technology, with educational information to learn new topics and more sophisticated and wide-ranging resource data becoming available.  From instruction to digital aerial photos, and from forest resource data to digital topographic maps, the Internet is a treasure trove waiting to be mined by foresters and other natural resource managers.  And besides that, it's fun!  This will be the most exciting and enjoyable computer workshop you have ever taken, and you will be amazed at the amount of information available for GIS uses and the ease of finding and using it.

Instructor:  Tim Rowell, Vice-President, Mapping and GIS Technologies, Forest Resources Systems Institute, Clemson, South Carolina.

Continuing Education Credits:   7 Continuing Forestry Education hours, Category 1; 7 Georgia Real Estate Appraiser continuing education hours.

It's More Than Making Pretty Maps:  Making Spatial Data Work for You
8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (lunch, materials, and refreshment breaks are included in registration fee)

If you work with Arcview and want to learn how to get more useful information from it, this workshop is for you.  you may already know how to use ArcView to answer stand-specific questions such as, "How many acres were harvested in this stand?" or "How many miles of roads do we have in this stand?"  Now you want to know how to put all of this information together to answer questions on a landscape basis, such as, "How many acres of 12-18-year-old pine do we have?" or "How many acres of each species do I manage?"

Topics covered include getting free data off the Web, creating and attributing spatial coverages in ArcView, integrating GPS data with existing spatial coverages, joining existing data tables to the spatial coverages, planning and building a spatial database, updating your spatial database, and querying your spatial database.

Instructor:  Tripp Lowe, Information Analyst and GIS Lab Coordinator, University of Georgia Warnell School of Forest Resources, Athens, Georgia.

Continuing Education Credits:   6.5 Continuing Forestry Education hours, Category 1; 7 Georgia Real Estate Appraiser continuing education hours.

Making Your Way through the Maze:  Deciding What Imagery Best Meets Your Needs
8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (lunch, materials, and refreshment breaks are included in registration fee)

Every year new types of remotely sensed imagery are becoming available to resource managers.  From digital airborne imagery to orthophotos, to high spatial resolution satellite imagery, to LIDAR and RADAR, resource managers face a myriad of options from which to choose.  Deciding what imagery to use can be a formidable task.  This presentation provides an overview of currently available and future image sources.  Straight-forward criteria and decision rules for determining what imagery will best meet the needs of your project will be reviewed.

Instructor:  Kass Green, President, Pacific Meridian Resources, Emeryville, California

Continuing Education Credits:   6 Continuing Forestry Education hours, Category 1

GPS/Mapping For Field Foresters -- One Package Does the Job
8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (lunch, materials, and refreshment breaks are included in registration fee)

There is a lot of confusion about GPS, GIS, and mapping in the forest industry.  Some solutions are too expensive, too difficult, or too confusing to the field forester.  This workshop will focus specifically on using a combined GPS/GIS package to perform all of the functions that foresters need.  You will get hands-on experience with setting up and using a GPS data collector.   Real-time and post-processing techniques as well as editing functions will be demonstrated.  Georeferencing of digital photos; importing georeferenced images, tops and other GIS data; and plotting professional maps in minutes also will be shown.   Powerful functions such as search, filter, and classify will be performed.   All of the above functions will be demonstrated with CMT's GPS equipment and office PC-GS 3.6 with Forester's Toolkit.  Other manufacturers' products will be discussed.   You will receive helpful handouts and fact sheets regarding the use of this technology.

Instructor:  Mark Milligan, President, GeoTech Systems, Tallahassee, Florida

Continuing Education Credits:   7.5 Continuing Forestry Education hours, Category 1; 7.5 Georgia Real Estate Appraiser continuing education hours.
