The 2000 Southern Forestry GIS Conference will be held at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education on the campus of the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia.

A. From the North:

From U.S. 441, Commerce

From Commerce, Georgia, at Interstate 85, take U.S. 441 South for approximately 20 miles, travel under the Athens Perimeter (Loop 10) and continue until you reach the first traffic signal, College Avenue. Turn right on College Avenue and proceed through downtown Athens until College Avenue reaches a dead end at Broad Street. You'll notice the UGA Arch directly across the street. Turn right onto Broad Street then left at the next traffic signal, Lumpkin Street. Proceed down Lumpkin Street through five traffic signals. At the sixth traffic signal, Carlton Street, turn left. The Georgia Center for Continuing Education is located on the immediate left, at the intersection of Lumpkin and Carlton Streets.

From U.S. 129, Jefferson

Remain on U.S. 129 South into Athens. Cross over the Athens Perimeter (Loop 10) and continue toward downtown Athens through four traffic signals. At the fifth signal, turn right onto Milledge Avenue. Proceed through two traffic signals, and at the third signal, Broad Street, turn left. Travel down Broad Street through two traffic signals, and at the third signal, Lumpkin Street, turn right. Proceed down Lumpkin Street through five traffic signals. At the sixth traffic signal, Carlton Street, turn left. The Georgia Center for Continuing Education is located on the immediate left, at the intersection of Lumpkin and Carlton Streets.

 

From GA 106

When GA 106 takes a sharp turn to the left just inside the Athens-Clarke County line, do not take the turn. Instead, continue straight ahead and you'll be traveling on North Avenue. After passing over the Athens Perimeter (Loop 10) stay on North Avenue through three traffic signals. When you pass underneath a high railroad trestle you will reach a fork in the road with a traffic signal. Stay in the left lane and bear left onto Thomas Street. You will pass the Athens Welcome Center on the right. Pass through two additional traffic signals, then turn right onto Broad Street. Travel down Broad Street through two traffic signals, and at the third signal, Lumpkin Street, turn left. Proceed down Lumpkin Street through five traffic signals. At the sixth traffic signal, Carlton Street, turn left. The Georgia Center for Continuing Education is located on the immediate left, at the intersection of Lumpkin and Carlton Streets.

 

From U.S. 29, Danielsville

Remain on U.S. 29 South until you reach the Athens Perimeter (Loop 10). Enter the Perimeter traveling westward, then take the first exit, North Avenue. Turn left onto North Avenue and proceed through three traffic signals. When you pass underneath a high railroad trestle you will reach a fork in the road with a traffic signal. Stay in the left lane and bear left onto Thomas Street. You will pass the Athens Welcome Center on the right. Pass through two additional traffic signals, then turn right onto Broad Street. Travel down Broad Street through two traffic signals, and at the third signal, Lumpkin Street, turn left. Proceed down Lumpkin Street through five traffic signals. At the sixth traffic signal, Carlton Street, turn left. The Georgia Center for Continuing Education is located on the immediate left, at the intersection of Lumpkin and Carlton Streets.

B: From the South:

Stay on U.S. 441 North into Athens, and turn left onto South Milledge Avenue. At the third traffic signal (Five Points), turn right onto Lumpkin Street. Proceed down Lumpkin Street. At the second traffic signal, Carlton Street, turn right. The Georgia Center for Continuing Education is on the immediate left, at the corner of Lumpkin and Carlton Streets.

 

C. From the East:

When approaching from the east on U.S. 78, travel under the Athens Perimeter (Loop 10) then take a left at the next traffic signal onto the Perimeter going westbound. Exit the Perimeter at the next exit, which is the College Station Road exit. Turn right onto College Station Road, then turn right at the second traffic signal onto East Campus Road. At the first traffic signal, turn left onto Carlton Street. Proceed through two traffic signals at Agriculture Drive and Sanford Drive. The Georgia Center for Continuing Education is on the immediate right at the end of Carlton Street, as it reaches a dead end at Lumpkin Street.

 

D: From the West:

From U.S. 78

Approaching Athens eastbound on U.S. 78, pass through three traffic lights, then turn right onto the Athens Perimeter (Loop 10) East. After traveling approximately five miles and passing three exits, exit onto College Station Road. Turn left onto College Station Road, then turn right at the third traffic signal onto East Campus Road. At the first traffic signal, turn left onto Carlton Street. Proceed through two traffic signals at Agriculture Drive and Sanford Drive. The Georgia Center for Continuing Education is on the immediate right at the end of Carlton Street, as it reaches a dead end at Lumpkin Street.

 

From GA 316

Stay on GA 316 until you reach the Athens Perimeter (Loop 10). Following the signs to The University of Georgia, enter onto the Perimeter traveling east. After traveling approximately five miles and passing three exits, exit onto College Station Road. Turn left onto College Station Road, then turn right at the third traffic signal onto East Campus Road. At the first traffic signal, turn left onto Carlton Street. Proceed through two traffic signals at Agriculture Drive and Sanford Drive. The Georgia Center for Continuing Education is on the immediate right at the end of Carlton Street, as it reaches a dead end at Lumpkin Street.

 

From Nearby Major Interstates

 

Traveling south from the Carolinas on Interstate 85, exit at U.S. 441 South through Commerce, Georgia, then follow directions A.

Traveling north from Atlanta on Interstate 85, exit onto GA 316 (University Parkway) and follow directions D.

Traveling west from Augusta on Interstate 20, exit onto U.S. 78 West and follow directions C.

 

Arriving by Air

The University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education is served by two airports. The Athens-Ben Epps Airport offers connecting flights to and from Charlotte, North Carolina. The Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport is located one-and-a-half hours from Athens. Consult your travel agent for the best travel options.

 

From Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport

Upon leaving the airport, follow the road signs onto Interstate 85 North. Remain on I-85 North for approximately 25 miles, and exit onto GA 316. At this point, follow directions D.

 

From Athens-Ben Epps Airport

Follow Ben-Epps Drive out of the airport and turn left onto Winterville Road. Continue on Winterville Road until it reaches a dead end at U.S. 78 (a four-lane highway). Turn right onto U.S. 78, pass underneath the Athens Perimeter (Loop 10), then, at the next traffic signal, take a left onto the Perimeter traveling westbound. At this point, follow directions C.

 

Ground Transportation

There is scheduled ground shuttle service between Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport and the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Local taxi service is available for transportation to and from Athens-Ben Epps Airport. Return group transportation service to either airport can be arranged and confirmed with the Guest Service Desk located at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education's main entrance.

Rental car service is also available at both airports.
